My tercel sometimes gets stuck on 2nd gear while driving on the freeway. It doesnt happen all the time but it usually happens once a trip. For some reason it stays on 2nd unless I slow down to under 50 mph and stomp on the gas till it goes back to 1st gear and upshifts to 2nd and 3rd. Is there an adjustment that needs to be made? What could the problem be? by the way the tranny never slips. Thanks
A: Sounds like your transmission is going into "Limp In" mode, where only a few gears work. The computer has picked up a problem. This usually is in that mode until the driver shuts the car off. But it sounds like yours is coming and going while you're driving since you can get it to go to 1st gear...then work its way up to third.
When it's in that mode, a scanner can be hooked up to the computer that will give a readout of where the problem lies. Without that, you're looking at about many different things it could be - both internal and externally on the transmission. So only advice is to have it diagnosed at a repair shop. Without that diagnosis, you won't know what to do.

Q: Check Engine Light on 1995 Toyota Tercel - Possible Problems? Serious?
I have a 95 Tercel, runs fantastic, 78000 miles. I took it for a smog check, it passed, and driving away, I found the check engine light on. Went back, they said they noticed it, it came on only after the test, that if it had come on during test it wouldn't have passed. Nothing to do with them they believe.
Problem is, I am giving this car away to a poor young family with limited english - I don't want to saddle them with something they can't handle, plus I am leaving in 5 days, so don't have time to check this out with a mechanic (nor the money). Any ideas what's wrong - any chance it could be minor easily fixable? I'm a middle aged woman with no mechanical skills - but my husband MAY be able to do some simple things you could suggest.

A: Sometimes if you unhook the battery for five minutes it will reset the light and it will be out when you hook it back up IF the problem is gone. This light normally means a bad sensor of some sort. Not really bad but may affect mileage. I think the SMOG place had something to do with it. I doubt it was coincidence.

I have a 1995 toyota tercel, I was driving on the expressway, and my car started to make a rumbling noise, and the check engine light started to flash. Keep in mind that light has been on for four years, and it always passed inspection, but now its blinking. As i was driving, as i said it was rumbling, and sometimes, when I reached a certain speed, it wouldn't let me go faster at times, and when i got home, the noise seemed to becoming from the muffler. Before I take it any where, I would like to see if any of you have any advice or suggestions.
A: It sounds like your catalytic converter is going bad, you probably needing a new one. Looks like it's time to go to the exhaust shop

A: It has a strut type shock in the back--you didn't list your question really? It has to have the rear seats removed to change them and a special spring compressor to change the strut cartridge-so, is not just a bolt in operation which tends to increase the cost more. Get quotes from several shops and don't forget to ask what kind of warranty there is with them, including labor to replace. good luck

A: the car it self are good cars ,the automatic transmissions they have in them though are not so tough,they do give problems,usually at higher miles though,but the most of them that i see seem to slip or cause problems when they get some mileage on them,other than that they seem to last pretty good,if i was going to buy one i think i would get a standard shift,they seem to out last anything else these days.good luck on it.

A: Have you tried looking to see if there may be one on Craigslist for your area and/or advertising that you're looking for one? You can do the same thing on sites like eBay (post that you want one).
I don't know if this would do any good, but you could try a few of the search engines, using, "1995 Toyota Tercel, needs engine". Who knows. You might run into something that way.
Have you tried junk yards in your area or even leaving your number in case one comes in? You could leave a note/notice in places like local car repair places, local supermarket bulletin boards, or maybe even ask if you could post something on a high school bulletin board.

A: You might if in good shape start at 1000.00 as the engine is still used today on some Toyota's.
