Q: How can I get more horsepower and over all top speed in my 2.7L 4 cylinder 2001 toyota tacoma?

A: I hope my answer does not sound flip as it is not meant to be. If you really need more power, trade your 4 cylinder for a 6 cylinder. You will get more power for less money and still have a stock engine for reliability and service.

Q: 2001 Toyota Tacoma Starts Then Dies?
Hi, my 2001 Tacoma 2.7 L has been doing this lately, its not all the time, just maybe once every 5-10 times i go to start it: When its already warmed up (never when its cold) the engine will turn over and catch and run for about one second (always at very low rpms) then it will choke and die. When i go to start it back up I have to give it a lot of gas and rev it up to get it to run again then it will typically idle fine. Once however, i had to keep my foot on the gas for about 5 minutes or else the rpms would drop and it would die. I've replace the fuel filter and spark plugs, and checked the fuel pump which is fine. There is no service light that comes on. I have no clue what this is, any help would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks for your time!

A: Try cleaning the MAF sensor with Carb Cleaner first off.... I do know a bad O2 sensor will do EXACTLY What you stated, But it's to my understanding a check engine light should come on?? Basically when the motor is cold the ECU runs on a controlled loop program "Which is why your car starts and runs fine" Once the car reached operational temp the loop program is disengaged and your car starts to receive readings from your sensors and balances out air/fuel. Your O2 sensor is most likely giving out a bad signal and is throwing off your air/fuel mix causing your motor to die at idle. My best advise replace the O2 sensor. Well let me be specific the 1st O2 sensor on your exhaust manifold. Best of luck!!! Edit--- What that Toyota Tech guy said Kinda Makes sense too.... Like I stated IF it was an O2 sensor you should have seen a code. My diagnosis was good but .. Well he's a Toyota Tech lol Don't be fooled what he told you to do is really not that difficult do not let it temp you to hire someone with basic skills you can do this. Like he sated get to the TB remove it, remove the sensor clean and lube it, New TB gasket bolt it back on. The hose he speaks of runs the warm coolant through your TB to loosen it up on cold days, you will lose coolant but nothing to crazy. To bleed your coolant system park on a hill, or jack the front of your car up remove your cap and run the car till it's warm, you should get air bubbles keep topping it off till the bubbles stop. Hopefully through this whole precedure your tps should not need to be reset. again..... BEST OF LUCK!!!!

Q: 2001 Toyota Tacoma Warning Light?
How can his engine warning light be "cleared" without paying $99 at Toyota to do diagnostics test..this happened 1 other time also and they cleared it ?

A: just pull the efi fuse for 5 min

Q: the check engine light on my 2001 toyota tacoma came on and is giving me a p0171 code (system to lean bank 1)?
what could it be i don;tthink is the oxigen sensor, also is burning way to much fuel and you could smell gases coming out of the pipe when before it was just an odor less vapor. before it was doing like 20-22 mpg now is between 14-17mpg. i would apriciate a logical answer. almer_mayor@hotmail.com

A: The mileage and the smell are symptoms, not the problem. A P0171 is most often caused my the MAF sensor, the one in the tube near the air filter. If you remove it (two screws), turn it over and look very carefully down inside the sensor, you will probably see two little bumps (the actual sensors) suspended by wires. These bumps will probably look very dirty, or fuzzy. If so, you need a sensor. The units tend to leak internally and contaminate the sensors by insulating them. The Mass Air Flow sensor then thinks there is less air than is actually going by, so the computer cuts the fuel down, which sets the lean code. You can clean it temporarily, but the issue is the leakage, not the dirt. You will eventually need a sensor regardless, about $150.

Q: 2001 toyota tacoma question?
just bought a tacoma 5spd and its weird it doesnt have a rpm gauge. ive seen a couple on the internet that also doesnt have rpm gauges. how can i get one id like to have one since its a 5spd. and why doesnt it have one thanks. o yea its a 4x4 2.7 liter if that matters.

A: The 2.7 did not come with a tach...It was an option...The 2.7 was the economy tacoma...All the sr5,s did come with a tach...You can buy one from kragen or shucks at a reasonable price that will work..You can get a better one from www.summitracing.com..Ever notice that all the 2.7 trucks have manuel locking hubs and the v6 do not?Same reason ecnomy....

Q: is there a fuel reset switch on a 2001 toyota tacoma?

A: None Toyotas have a fuel reset switch.

Q: Is Jet Chip for 2001 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 liter (4 cylinder) any good?
i thought about purchasing one but im not sure if i should i would like to know if they actually work. Thanks

A: yes, it works, however, you will find yourself pushing the pedal more than usual to test it, and the result will be a higher gas bill for you.

Q: How to adjust the valves on a 2001 Toyota Tacoma, 4 cyl. 2.4 ltr.?

A: I guess you can, but hydraulic valves are self adjusting. If you have one making noise if probably need to be replaced. I believe when you do manually adjust hydraulic valves you back out the adjusting screw until it makes noise and then turn it back in 1/4 of a turn at a time until you have gone in 1 full turn. Good luck and buy a maintance manual. That is how I learned.

Q: Ticking noise when sitting still, not when moving, 2001 Toyota Tacoma, auto transmission.?
The engine is running when this occurs and the noise is coming from under the hood.

A: Engine running or not? After the engine stops the exhaust cools as it does it tick tick ticks. No problem just expanding and contraction from heating and cooling. Some cars do the tick for years and others it stops ticking as the exhaust get's old and rusty.

Q: 2001 Toyota Tacoma rough idling?
My truck started to idle roughly when at a stop sign. The check engine light came on and when it got into fourth gear, the whole truck started to vibrate. When I took it to the dealership, they told me that it might be a blown head gasket. Also, they said that the engine temp might have been too hot and could have warped one of the cylinder pistons. Any idea how much all this will cost me?

A: Auto-zone is not going to find a different check engine code than the misfire the dealer checked. The vibration only confirms the engine miss. The truck still needs to be Properly diagnosed. You need to know why it is missing. Coolant in the cylinder? Does it give off large amounts of white smoke?(coolant in the exhaust) Is the radiator low? another sign of coolant loss. A dye test may show the presence of combustion gas in the cooling system(another test). Did they put it on a scope and find out which cylinder is missing? Is there any engine noise or knock. A good dealer can check the freeze frame data( esp engine temp) at the time the check engine lite came on. There are many causes for misfire and guessing won't help you decide which way to go. You need an exact diagnosis and not a "you might need a headgasket" or might need a motor because that is big $$$. Tell the next shop you need a better answer. Going cheap on a autozone diagnosis will most certainly give you a bad result. If you paid a dealer for a maybe diagnosis you did not get your moneys worth and maybe need to talk to the manager. Good Luck-- N

Q: 2001 toyota tacoma?
anyone out there have this truck? if so have you done any engine modifications on it?

A: not much you can do with the smog stuff other than a k&n airfilter computer problems if you do

Q: 2001 toyota tacoma squeaks when cold out?
its a 4x4 2.7 liter 5spd trans. has 95k miles and timing belt has not been changed if its about 40 degrees or colder the car squeaks real bad when im driving if i floor the car it stops but once i let of the gas it squeaks again. after the truck warms up for 20 min or so it doesnt squeak at all also if its around 50 degrees or warmer it never makes a sound. what could this be is it the timing belt i want to change it just have to get the money first. shold i drive it anymore. it drives great just squeaks loud.

A: The squeaking is most likely no big deal. I doubt its the timing belt. My guess is either the powersteering belt or alternator belt. Trying tightening them, and if it still does it, replace the belts. Its a cheap thing to do and not very hard to install.

Q: 2001 Toyota Tacoma (3.4L, 6 cylinder) starting problem ?
At cold start it idles rough but once it get to operating temp it idles fine. when i shut it off and try to turn it has trouble starting it will catch on for like a second then die. so when i turn the key i give it some gas and it turns on, i usually have to hold it for a while to have it work fine any. it seems to be throttle related any suggestions on what it could be. i thought it was the spark plugs but i i changed them 2 times once with single grounded plugs then with double grounded plugs. i also changed the ignition wires two and the coil packs. Help!!!!!!! i changed the fuel filter about 3-6k miles ago as for the fuel pump it has never been changed(car has 170,000 miles). and yes it cranks up and then die's.i rolled it in 2 the shop it was starting fine. I swear i think the car has a mid of its own.

A: There are several things that can cause this issue. First what kind of plugs, you should stick with O/E plugs. You could have a contaminated MAF sensor, try cleaning it out. Be careful when doing this. Don't want to damage the wires. You didn't mention if any CEL is on (check engine light), but you could also have a temp sensor problem. If your sensor thinks it a lot colder/warmer than it really is that will effect your fuel mix. You may need to test the sensor and see what it is reading at start up. Your basic hand held tester wont tell you this info, you will need a true diagnostic tool such as a dealership would have.

Q: ignition problem with toyota tacoma 2001?
never had a warning of any problems starting, has a newer nappa battery , original owner, doesnt even click when you turn the key but the battery reads 12.6 volts,i thought it might be the starter /solenoid which is integral with the starter and changed it out but, that aint it so whats left? a bad ground? starter relay? or computer?terminals are clean at battery. the dash lights came up slowly the last time i tried to start it then faded then came back up, and then i turned the key and heard silence......

A: battery has a bad cell not enough cca's batterys with bad cell(s) will still register 12+volts but will fail load tests

Q: 2001 Tacoma, Can I Run E85?
I have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma 2.4l, should I run E85? What I really mean is will it cause any engine problems?

A: To be certain of this information best to go see a Toyoto Dealer. E-5 is a bit too much of a concentration for MANY cars if they are NOT specifically designed for it. Problems related to the fuel system failure CAN result. The absorbsion of water and the deteriation of rubber fuel lines are all a part of the horror stories surrounding this stuff. Best to stay with E-20 of less untill you get the straight skinny on this particular model car.
