Q: I want a good car like a 1992 - 1997 supra for my first car. How much will the extras cost?
If I do well in my senior year of school, my parents will by me a car! I have done a bit of research, and concluded that i would like something along the lines of a Toyota Supra. I am not too interested in power and racing qualities e.c.t but i love the way it looks. A Toyota Celica also looks looks on the cards. As im on a budget of around $15 000Au (Around $20 000 American) i am looking at one of the 1992-1997 models. I am concerened that this seems too good to be true, and I am going to have to pay for repairs, insurance, fuel (Gas) and rego. I have heard that these cars are reliable but I REALLY don't want to have to pay for large amounts of these extras. So basiclly how much will i probs have to pay for these? If its alot, what other similar cars are there?

A: Mate you have a couple of things wrong in your question. First things first, 15,000 AU is actually more along the lines of about 8 grand US, and the second problem is your choice of first car. Sure you can get non-turbo'd Supras but they're still sports cars, and your insurance will still skyrocket. Also for that price the majority of the JZA80 (ie. 92-97) models will be thrashed to bits being a ricer's car. Also If you're not interested in power and racing qualities then you ALSO picked the wrong car. 276hp is a lot for a first car, it may not sound like much but it is. Especially cause it's lighter than other cars with the same amount of power. Finally, the insurance. Let's put it this way. I got an insurance quote for an Audi A4, 1997, 1.8 NON-TURBO, and my quote was, and I'm not making this up, 7 grand per year (I'm 17). Don't underestimate insurance prices or how much what sort of car you have can jack them up. Sports cars like the Supra are very bad for insurance rates for teenagers. My mum even had to pay over 1000 a year for her MY05 Subaru WRX and she was 40 at the time. Now that that's out of the road, what car SHOULD you get? I suggest a Honda Prelude or your second choice, the Toyota Celica.

Q: Toyota Supra (Mark-III). Is it a buy?
I want to buy a Toyota Supra, and I'm aiming for a 3rd-generation (1986-1992) model, with a turbo (or twin turbo). This might be the only model range I can afford :P Is there anyone out there who owns one, who could give me the ups and downs on their car? Specifically, I want to know: -Common electrical problems, and for which year/model. -Common mechanical problems, and for which year/model. -What safety features does it have (power steering, airbags, ABS brakes, etc.) So, are there any owners out there who could give me the facts on their Mark-III Toyota Supra? Is it a buy? Thanks! -Joe

A: Shoot me an email. I've owned 5 of them so far. (2) 1986.5, (1) 1988, (2) 1989. One key note, if you're in the states, the only kind you're going to get is turbo. The twin turbo versions of this car were UK and Japan only.
