Q: Toyota Sienna or Ford Taurus?
Ok I was planning to buy a 2001 Ford Taurus for $1000 but my dad just offered me his 1999 Toyota Sienna for free. I know having a minivan has its benefits esp. for a college kid like me but I don't want to be riding like an old man with family. Which should I choose?

A: get the sienna, my mom had both, fell in love with the sienna, it was really reliable, and the taurus kept breaking down and she hated it, like the headlight randomly stopped working, and the only problem with the sienna was the AC stopped working once during the winter

Q: Can I install a factory radio in a different vehicle(from Toyota to Chevy)?
I had an after market stereo put into two vehicles, one was a 1999 Toyota Sienna and one was a 1989 Chevy 1500. I still have the factory stereo for the Toyota Sienna and the stereo for in the 1989 Chevy 1500 has been stolen. I no longer have the factory stereo for the Chevy or I would just put it back in the truck.

A: You can install the aftermarket stereo in the Chevy, but you cannot put the Toyota stock radio into the Chevy if you arn't really good with figiuring out wiring and knowing what goes where. The two stock systems are completly different.

Q: Toyota Sienna '99 rear view mirror does not move up/down?
I noticed that after switching car alarm mode from valet to normal, passenger side power rear view mirrow stopped moving up and down. I talked to the Toyota dealer - he said that the problem is with car alarm. I talked to the car alarm installer, he said that car alarm does not connect to power mirrors, therefore cannot affect them, and suggested go to the Toyota dealer again... Car alarm warranty expired few year ago. Car - Toyota Sienna 1999. Car Alarm - aftermarket Automate model. I suspect the problem is with wiring or connectors, but do not know how to find and fix it. Appreciate your input how to solve this problem.

A: I doubt the two are related. The Toyota dealer is a doof... Trying to locate a electrical fault is usualy very time consuming and expensive to have done. Spend half a day checking the switches and any connectors you can find. Does the mirror motor make noise? (click-click-grrr-grrr-grr) Then it's not electrical. If it makes no noise, a wire came off somewhere, or the switch is bad.

Q: What do these Toyota OBD codes mean?
This question will likely require the experience of an up-to-date Toyota Mechanic. I have a 1999 Toyota Sienna V-6. It runs fine but It's On Board Diagnostics computer was tested for it's annual vehicle inspection, which now includes emissions in the state of NH. There were error codes that came up, however the garage doing it didn't know much about toyotas so they said those were proprietary dealer codes. They are as follows: P0125 which did say was "Insufficent Coolant Temp. for Closed Loop Fuel Control" P1130 no Description P1135 no Description P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected P0305 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected These likely indicate a sensor malfunction is my guess, but which one and where? What must I do to make these codes go away? I really can't afford to pay the dealer to work on this vehicle. I am capable of most mechanical repairs. If someone with an accurate understanding would be good enough to share their knowledge it would be much appreciated.

A: P1130 is Air/Fuel Sensor Circuit Range/Performance P1135 is Air/Fuel sensor Heater Circuit these are because cylinders 1,3,and 5 are not firing which also causes code P0125 .These cylinders are not making heat. the P0300 is because 1,3,and 5 dont miss constantly but they do frequently hence 301,303,and 305. P codes are for Powertrain. I would give the vehicle a good tuneup and make sure you are firing on all cylinders. Possibly need new O2 sensors if those codes don't go away(1130 & 1135) The definitions you DO have are correct. The P0125 "closed loop fuel control" thing is referring about your vehicle no longer being in "warm up" mode. In warm up mode you vehicle does not rely on sensors, it just follows default values for a specific length of time to warm up the engine, then it will adjust everything according to the sensors's inputs to the computer on the vehicle

Q: Open the back door of a van with a broken latch?
The back door of my van opens when you squeeze a plastic latch. The lift latch broke and now I can't get the door open to fix it. Anyone know how to get the door open? Its a 1999 Toyota Sienna.

A: You should see an access panel on the door that hides a release cable with a handle on it.

Q: Sienna Door Locks Problem?
I have a 1999 Toyota Sienna that developed a problem with the digital clock, interior lights and external, electric door locks at the same time. Is there a fuse or something that is common between these? Where would it be located or what else should I check. Thanks! I figured it out! The lighted mirror on the visor had fallen off and left 2 connectors exposed. When I closed the visor, the connectors made contact and blew the interior lights fuse. This also affected the external power door locks!

A: Eautorepair.net has online service manuals and wiring diagrams for a small fee or Wirediagram.com has wiring info Possibly a bad common ground or fuse/power issue but I don't think they would be on the same power circuit....more likely a ground problem or common power short or possibly a bad common power relay for the circuits....not sure if one is used for these items. Check all fuses for power on both sides of the fuse through the little hole in the plastic at the top of the fuse legs with a test light.

Q: What the hell is wrong with this car?
We have a 1999 Toyota sienna. Suposed to be a dependable car right? Right! Well let me tell you, not all toyotas are dependable. Our mini van has been running horribly. It shakes and the gas peddle is very sensitive. We have taken this car in so many times and they replace something and it doesn't fix the problem. Well this is the last straw. They replaced the injectors and now it's still not working...in fact they won't give it back yet cus it's not ready to go. we have a life and we need our car. Has anyone seen this problem before or does anyone know what the heck this is? I think we're just going to get rid of the fucking thing.

A: a good idea , get rid of it a.s.a.a p.

Q: Power steering fluid into gas tank?
Accidentally , I poured one bottle 12OZ of Power Steering fluid(oily) into gas tank (half filled ) in my 1999 Toyota Sienna Van.... 6 cylinder engine. What is a proper remedy: Shall I fill it with more gas and pour a bottle of Lucas injector cleaner or Marvel mystery oil into gasoline or do I have to get it drained completely at a high cost. It was dark and I mistook for it being an injector cleaner fluid.

A: Hey, the powersteering fluid goes in the power steering pump. It won't make its way into the pump from the gas tank. It will probably cause your vehicle to smoke a bit, and might have some power issues until its out of the system but it won't cause any major damage. This is the first time I've ever heard of anyone doing that. Not to mention that's not even close to the right end of the vehicle where the power steering fluid is supposed to go. I'm guessing a mistaken bottle instead of getting injector cleaner you got a hold of the power steering fluid. That's why there's labels on the bottles. Anyhow no major harm caused, just a little smoke for a while.

Q: my passenger side mirror broke- mirror only- dealer can only sell the whole side mirror assembly-?
is there a way to replace the mirror only as side mirror assembly cost over $160.00 1999 Toyota Sienna XLE

A: yes you can, it's a very easy fix. if you're not comfortable with doing it yourself a small rundown repair shop will do it cheap, they usually get parts from junkyards.

Q: on charging a car battery 12 volts do I use 6 or 2 amps?
1999 Toyota Sienna 6 cyl

A: use the 6amp setting, the 2amp will take forever.

Q: Toyota..Why are they replacing the lush Camry Solara with the Venza, a station wagon?
My 1999 Toyota Camry Solara is the hottest car I ever owned (tho I don't like the weaker newer models with the bumble bee eyes and wilted soppy rear.) Why do all the Toyotas today look like lineless bubbles with bazarr shapes? Most of them are UGLY. Will Toyota ever learn how to design a good looking car? Their Sienna mini van looks like a refrigerator on wheels with bumble bee eyes and a humpty dumpty face!

A: Nobody bought the Solara. It wasn't that great a car just a 2 door Camry. A lot more people do buy cross over vehicles like the Venza.

Q: Which mini van for reliability and safety? (between Odyssey vs. Sienna)?
We have a lemon 1999 Grand Caravan and are looking to buy a used mini van. We have 2 young kids and plan to have more kids. Which minivan is better for reliability, safety, resale value, price, gas mileage wise? The vehicle will be used for family transportation and occasional family trips. I like the sliding doors on mini vans and 2nd row power window on the newer models of Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey. FYI, we are in FL so no driving in terrain or snow.

A: I think the Honda is more fun to drive, handles better but it is in demand so you might be able to get a better price on the Toyota. my neighbor bought a Kia Rio and it looks nice for the bargain price. Holds 7 and gets 21 mpg. ppl are trading in a lot of SUV's so check your dealers lots for deals.

Q: Finance a newer car to build credit back up from imminent shortsale/foreclosure? but with monthly payment?
We currently out right own 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan with 93K miles but this van has been a problem since we bought it in 2001. Now AC only works in 5th (highest), power window & vent doesn't work on driver side, CD player/radio power on/off, volume doesn't work and we had to have several things repaired mechanically on this van & and the inside roof is now peeling off and bubbling. Would buying a newer mini van to replace this lemon vehicle will be a good idea to build our credit back up from our future credit hit that will happen this year due to short sale/foreclosure? We've been meaning to get rid of this van for 2 years now and we would like to get a better vehicle before this van gives another problem that we need to repair with high cost. We have 5K in the bank but also have 11K credit card debt. Should we pay off credit card or put down pmt on the minivan with this 5K? For the minivan, we are interested in Toyota Sienna around 12K and the van will be a family hauler.

A: Wow, you are really in a tough spot. You definitely need to replace the vehicle, but I recommend doing it without incurring any more debt. Keep the 5K for emergency savings, and pay the credit cards down from your income. If you have more specific questions, let me know, but the site below should give you some good tips on how to handle savings and debt. Good luck!
